Response to Referral from South Lakeland Local Committee - Integrated Parking Strategy

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Response to the referral from South Lakeland Local Committee to consider developing an integrated strategic direction for on and off-street parking across Cumbria to ensure consistency, improve quality of service to users, and enhance the tourist economy

The Corporate Director – Environment and Community Services provided a response to the referral from South Lakeland Local Committee requesting that Cabinet develop an integrated strategy with other local authorities and bodies, for on and off-street parking across Cumbria.  Members were advised that whilst the Council would support measures to co-ordinate the management of on and off-street parking and that it was acknowledged that this could be a welcome boost to tourism previous attempts to progress this had been unsuccessful primarily due to the inherent difficulties in bringing such a large group (the parking operators) with widely differing priorities together.  Further work was required to make sure the conditions were right for a suitable scheme to be developed and implemented in the future.

RESOLVED,    that Cabinet agree the need for a county wide parking strategy in principle but does not at this stage commit to the introduction of the strategy until further work has been done to identify a basis for its introduction.
