Connecting Cumbria - Update

Decision Maker: County Council Local Committee for South Lakeland

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Consideration was given to a report by the Corporate Director – Economy and Highways providing an overall update on the Connecting Cumbria Programme.

Deployment of fibre broadband services through the Connecting Cumbria Programme was making good progress.  Phase 1 had exceeded its original target in making fibre services available to considerably more properties than originally anticipated.  Works under Phase 2 were progressing well and the Council was working with BT to extend deployment to further properties across the county.

As of 1st March 2017 Connecting Cumbria had made fibre broadband infrastructure accessible to over 90% of homes and businesses in the South Lakeland area, most of which would not have been covered by commercial deployment.  Coverage was anticipated to increase to over 96% on completion of the works currently programmed.  A map appended to the report gave an indication of where these services were available or were being made available.  Between deployment under the programme and commercial deployment programme, more than 85% of properties in the South Lakeland area could now access superfast broadband.  This was anticipated to rise to 90% on completion of works currently programmed.  Work had been undertaken in 31 exchange areas across the district with more than 205 fibre network structures now ready to accept orders for services.

There was further work to be done to support the expansion of superfast services in the South Lakeland area.  Members’ help was welcomed to support lobbying, encourage service take up to trigger further investment, encourage commercial deployment of services, and make constituents aware of options for community schemes.

In responding to a number of detailed questions from members the Project Manager advised that of properties in the district that could currently access fibre broadband 35% had so far taken up the new services, which was around average across the county.  In response to concerns raised by the local members for High Furness and Lyth Valley in relation to issues within their particular divisions the Project Manager agreed to look into the problems they had highlighted.
